The Kitimat Modernization Project consists of a complete rebuild and upgrade of the existing aluminum smelter operated by Rio Tinto Alcan in Kitimat, BC. This project required a total investment of more than $3.3 billion over four years.
Terrace Paving/Kentron Construction supplied aggregates and surface work on a regular basis. Paving projects include bypass roads, improvements to the parking area at the plant, parking and roads for the camp and paving work in the new plant.
Kentron Construction was awarded the ready mix concrete supply contract for this project in January 2011 and began supply in July 2011. Kentron established a brand new fully winterized portable concrete batch plant a few kilometres from the job site, and supplied up to 11,100 m3 of concrete to the site monthly throughout construction. This project required over 120,000 m3 of high specification concrete and aggregates to be delivered over three years. Notable mix designs supplied included self-consolidating concrete mixes, high alumina cement concrete, and 2 continuous pours of over 100 hours for slip-formed silo structures.
