Terus Highway Division was the successful low-bidder on the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s Highway 22, Highway 3B and Highway 3 Trail and Castlegar Areas Project in Spring, 2024. The project scope included resurfacing 10km of highway from Waneta, BC through to Trail, BC, most of which was 5+ lanes wide. In addition to the Trail works, there was a driving lane resurfacing component in Castlegar, BC, where the Ministry had slated 8km of driving lanes to milled and paved. All aspects of the project were completed during the night to minimize the impact on local traffic and surrounding businesses.

The first phase began in early May, working to mill the existing surface of Highway 3B from the Eastern end of the project and progressing towards downtown Trail. Heavy precipitation during the months of May & June required our team to diligently monitor and repair the road to maintain a safe driving surface for the traveling public. Paving followed in quick succession after completing the first phase of milling.

The second phase of the project took us through the downtown core of Trail. Logistically, Trail is a challenging place to work due to the high traffic volumes that commute to-and-from the local smelter. Additionally, there is one only bridge that crosses the Columbia River, forcing all commuting traffic to flow through the work zone. Terus Highways joined forces with Terus East Kootenays in a show of force to complete the paving through the downtown core. At certain key intersections, three asphalt pavers operated at once, creating less cold joints and providing a more resilient, longer lasting roadway.

Phase three of the project took place in Castlegar. Our team efficiently milled and repaved the traveling lanes of the primary artery on the South end of the city along Highway 22, before proceeding to resurface a lane climbing West-bound out of Castlegar up towards the Paulson Pass.

This project blended the intricacies of municipal paving with the complex logistics of night shift highway paving to create a challenge-rich, but rewarding project. This project elicits a degree of pride from the Terus Highways team, as many of them are local to the area. The project reached completion at the end of July 2024.
